Task 3: The Importance of communication skills for engineers

“Communication skills are an essential component in the education of engineering students to facilitate not just students’ education but also to prepare them for their future careers.”

Marc Riemer, Faculty of Engineering, Monash University (2007)

Communication skills applied in the engineering student education are equally as important as the journey towards their career as well.

Communication plays an important part in our life as it does not only applies in our education but in our daily life as well. Therefore, it is not only essential for engineering students but in fact, it is important for everyone. For example, when we are calling for a taxi through a call. Clear instructions and tone are necessary for the driver to locate our location for smooth pickup. Showing how it contributes to small things in our daily life.

Good communication skills are vital as it helps to convey the intended message and to understand more accurate information from the speaker. Thus preventing misunderstanding that can result in many consequences.

In the view of the engineering world, communication is essential as projects are dealt within a team. Engineering work is complex and technical, but not everyone has the same technical expertise. Hence, engineers must communicate with expertise from the required department. Understanding and clearing doubt through effective communication to ensure that all project participants are on the same page.
